Pelvic organ prolapse surgery includes procedures performed to treat a condition where pelvic organs, such as the uterus, bladder, or rectum, descend or bulge into the vaginal canal or beyond due to weakened pelvic floor muscles and ligaments. The descent may be associated with discomfort, pressure, and occasionally urinary or bowel incontinence.
These surgeries aim at restoring the normal position and support of the affected organs to alleviate symptoms and improve the quality of life. There are several types of surgery for pelvic organ prolapse, including:
1. Vaginal Mesh Placement: Synthetic or biological mesh is inserted into the vagina to support weakened pelvic tissues.
2. Sacrocolpopexy: This is a surgical approach whereby the uterus or other pelvic organs are supported with special surgical meshes or ligaments attached to pelvic attachment points.
3. Laparoscopic Surgery: This is a minimally invasive approach where surgery is performed through small incisions in the abdomen using a laparoscope-a camera.
4. Cervical Amputation: Amputation of the cervix-the neck of the uterus-and support of the pelvic organs.
5. Transvaginal Surgery: Surgical procedures entered through the vagina to support pelvic organs.
Type of surgery is decided based on severity of prolapse, general health, and patient preference. Risks and benefits vary with each procedure; thus, patients have to discuss these with their healthcare provider in order to determine the best-suited treatment option.
