Laparoscopic cystectomy is a surgical procedure done to remove cysts that are found in the body, usually within the abdominal cavity. It involves the use of a laparoscope, a small, lighted tube with a camera at its tip, inserted through small cuts in the abdomen. This enables the surgeon to see the cysts and tissues surrounding them on the monitor and do the removal through specially designed instruments passed through other tiny cuts.
Specifically, it can be used for cysts that grow in different organs or tissues, such as ovarian cysts-gravis, renal cysts, and others in the abdominal cavity. The main advantages of a laparoscopic cystectomy over open surgery are incisions of smaller size, fewer possibilities for infection, shorter times of recovery, and less post-operative pain. This is often preferred where possible, as it offers minimum invasion with quicker recovery for the patients.
