What are fillings?
Filling materials are dental materials used to restore a tooth that has been destroyed either by decay or trauma. When a tooth decays and creates a cavity, the decayed portion of the tooth is removed, and the space is filled with a restorative material. Fillings not only allow restoration of the tooth's function but also help prevent further damage and protect against bacteria. The most common filling materials contain amalgam, composite resins, gold, and ceramic.
Types of Fillings and Their Benefits
There are several types of fillings available, each having its benefits:
Amalgam Fillings: These are made from a mixture of metals. They are strong, yet reasonably priced; however, they do not exactly match the color of natural teeth.
Composite Fillings: These tooth-colored fillings work great with natural teeth and are usually used for visible cavities. They give nice durability and aesthetic appeal.
Gold fillings are strong and durable, thus they usually take a long time to wear out. This is also relatively more expensive compared with others.
Ceramic filling: This category of fillings is quite strong, durable, and aesthetic; as a result, it looks similar to natural tooth enamel.
The procedure involved and post-op recovery
Generally, filling of a cavity is straightforward dental work that sometimes takes less than one appointment. After that, the dentist will inject an anesthetic agent into the area surrounding the tooth, then remove the decaying portion of the tooth. After this, the cavity is filled with filling material, reshaping the tooth for its normal function. Sometimes, its aftermath results in a slight sensitivity, from which one recovers with little time and minimum discomfort. Proper oral hygiene practices and regular visits to the dentist are necessary in ensuring the long life span of the filling and overall good dental health.

A dental filling is a dental procedure used to fill cavities, cracks, or gaps in teeth. During this procedure, the dentist cleans the damaged area and fills it with a filling material.
Dental fillings can be used for various purposes, including treating cavities, repairing broken or cracked teeth, filling gaps between teeth, and correcting the shape or color of teeth.
Dental fillings are typically made from composite resin (white filling) or amalgam (metal filling). Composite fillings are preferred for their aesthetic appeal as they blend with the natural color of teeth, while amalgam fillings are more durable and commonly used for back teeth.
Local anesthesia is typically applied during a dental filling procedure, so the patient does not feel pain during the process. However, some sensitivity or mild discomfort may occur afterward, but this is usually temporary.
A dental filling procedure usually takes between 30 minutes to 1 hour, although the duration may vary depending on the size of the filling and the condition of the tooth.
After getting a dental filling, it's important to continue regular brushing and flossing of your teeth. Additionally, follow any specific post-filling care instructions provided by your dentist.
Dental fillings are generally long-lasting, but they can wear down or develop cracks over time. Regular dental check-ups and following your dentist's recommended oral hygiene routine can help prolong the durability of the filling.
There is typically no age limit for dental fillings. Children can also undergo dental fillings, but it's important for the dentist to consider the child's dental development and select an appropriate filling material.
