What is Bone Grafting?
Bone grafting is a surgical procedure that deals with the repair or replacement of damaged or missing bone. It involves transplanting bone tissue into a site where bone has been lost or is unable to heal properly. The procedure is widely used in orthopaedic surgeries, dental implants, and even in spinal surgeries. The graft can be taken from the patient's own body (autograft), from a donor (allograft), or synthetic materials, known as xenograft or alloplastic grafts, may be used to encourage bone regeneration.
When is Bone Grafting Needed?
Bone grafting is generally indicated when there is inadequate bone mass to support implants, repair fractures, or allow proper healing. For example, dental applications include a bone graft that provides a stable platform for dental implants in cases of bone loss in the jaw due to periodontal disease, injury, or tooth loss. Bone grafts are also used in orthopedic surgeries, such as joint replacements, and in spinal surgery for conditions such as degenerative disc disease, spinal fusions, or fractures which do not heal on their own.
Benefits and Recovery
Various advantages are availed by bone grafting, which include restoration of the structure of the bone, enhancing healing, and providing support for implants or prosthetics. Among the main advantages that could be considered is natural bone growth stimulation, offering long-term stability. The period of recovery from the surgery is variable, going up to a few weeks to months, depending on the extent of the surgery. Care after surgery is important to ensure that proper healing takes place and to avoid complications such as infection or graft rejection.

Bone grafting is a surgical procedure used to promote bone healing or compensate for bone loss. In this procedure, bone or synthetic bone material taken from another part of the body is placed in the area of damaged or missing bone. Bone grafting helps repair bone tissue by promoting bone regrowth and healing.
Bone grafting may be required in a variety of situations, such as accelerating the healing of broken bones, increasing the amount of bone available for placement of implants or prosthetics, or compensating for severe bone loss. Additionally, bone grafting is frequently used in jaw surgery, spine surgery, and orthopedic surgery.
The bone graft procedure and recovery time vary from person to person and depending on the type of graft used. Usually, the healing process can take several months after a bone graft is placed. During the healing process, the graft is expected to fuse with the bone and new bone tissue is formed. Results may vary depending on the type of graft, the area where it is applied, and the patient's general health condition.
