Labioplasty is the name given to a surgical procedure one undertakes to change the labia, or skin folds that surround the vagina. That said, the surgery is often cosmetic; however, there are also instances when it is medically necessary to treat health concerns such as labial hypertrophy, or labial adhesions.
Labioplasty is generally performed under local anesthesia; however, the surgery also can be executed under general anesthesia. The time taken for the procedure is usually an hour or so. Recovery after labioplasty usually is fast. Within a few days, to a week most patients are able to go back to normal activities.
There is not just one kind of labioplasty procedure. The most common type of labioplasty would have to be reduction labioplasty. Reduction labioplasty involves the decrease in size of the labia minora. Another labioplasty procedure is shaping labioplasty. Shaping labioplasty is generally designed to reshape the labia minora into a much more aesthetically pleasing shape.
